Post"The Women We Wanted to Look Like" ~ Designers

In her book The Women We Wanted to Look Like (St. Martin's Press: 1977), Brigid Keenan examined the women who influenced fashion in the 20th Century:

She brought fashion alive. She put it in touch with what was going on in the world, and with the young. And when she had done this for clothes she turned her attention to foundation garments and cosmetics, giving us the lightest underclothes ever, and a range of make-up which included unheard-of things like highlighters, glossers and face-shapers.

When Biba started her catalouge in 1967 she took the unconventional steps of choosing models who exaggerated this look, and allowing her photographers a free hand to do anything, so long as they got the look across in their pictures. Sarah Moon became the most famous of these: her misty, moody pictures for the Biba catalouge started a widespread craze in fashion photography that lasts to this day.

Zandra Rhodes was one of the many talents to emerge from London's Royal College of Art. She was known for her pretty fabric designs, and later, for astonishing floating fantasy clothes.
