This is the most unusual photo of SUZY PARKER that I have found. WHY?The gorgeous evening gown was created by Parisian designer Jean Desses out of aluminum cloth! It was photographed by Richard Avedon in Paris! These two photos were actually a 1956 double-page ad for the Aluminum Company of America! |
A NEW Richard Avedon sub-album was created in the History of Modeling Album: Some Top 60s Photographers.
Included in the Richard Avedon sub-album is a NEW Junior Bazaar Magazine 1945-1948 mini-album.
Junior Bazaar had been a section for teenage girls inside of Harper's Bazaar magazine. From 1945 through 1948, it was published as a separate magazine. Carmel Snow was the editor-in-chief of both Harper's... |
I just discovered that the above Avedon Fashion Photo Exhibit is in NYC at the International Center of Photography until 9/6/09. It looks like it must be wonderful, especially the photos of Suzy Parker, Dovima, and Audrey Hepburn in Paris.
There is a separate gallery at the Exhibit called "Paris at Night".
A companion catalog is available on Amazon. I hope to see the exhibit in July.-- just ordered the catalog which has the famous Jean Shrimpton pink spacesuit photo on the cover.
More information is available on the International Center of Photography... |

You won't believe these two Listerine ads that I found from the 1930s! According to Ulla Andersson, this is The Ugliest Breck Ad EVER! I don't think Ulla has ever taken a photo that is less than beautiful. However, with her glaring eyes and jutting chin she looks quite angry. Ulla explains:
I believe that this is possibly the ugliest Breck ad EVER! It was painted from a photo that was taken of me. I was sour all through the shoot because it was the worst possible lighting, and it was taken from my bad side. Then they reversed the sides somehow! I told them it would be bad, but they said the artist could... |
What a rare find! Here's Colleen Corby on the cover of the January 1966 IN magazine.
I was not familiar with this magazine, but it looks very similar to Ingenue and Co-ed. The full title is IN: For the Girl of Today, the Woman of Tomorrow. It was published in New York by Super Market Publishing Company, Inc., and this is Volume 1, Number 5.
|
With her dark hair and piercing innocent eyes, Colleen was the perfect cover girl. She was a bit more petite than some of the other regular Seventeen models and yet had a boldness about her mixed with that unmistakable innocence, a very alluring combination of qualities that the Seventeen readership practically worshiped. She was a hero for a whole generation of 13 to 18 year old girls, and boys, and received a healthy-sized pile of fan mail on a monthly basis during her hottest years.

Do you remember those big, heavy sewing catalogs that would sit on the counters of fabric stores? It was so much fun to look through them to see the latest styles! Many of the pattern companies also made smaller, condensed home versions that looked like magazines. Here are a few from Simplicity and McCall's from the 1960s.
